Story of Flexcil #1

Why are we developing FLEXCIL?

Our lives are quickly becoming digital, but the way we study has been stuck in limbo for the past 700 years. Sometimes we use devices like iPads and laptops to study, but when push comes to shove, we print things out and use paper notebooks, ultimately relying on our old ways: pen and paper (books&notes).

Why do students, who are familiar to digital, prefer analog environment when it comes studying?

There may not be a single reason, but the core reason is that the digital tool is more complicated and difficult to use than the pens and papers.

1. Digital note centered on text input

The popular digital note called ‘Evernote’ is an outstanding but a typical digital tool (We also use it regularly).

Evernote provides strong digital values like search, management, and synchronization. This is convenient for saving and managing information.

But it is inconvenient for viewing contents, highlighting, writing the memo and studying experience related to them.

Also, it is not suitable for the tablet or mobile environment.

2. Note solution specialized for handwriting

There are tools that are developed to use tablets like paper. Currently, ‘Notability’ or ‘NoteShelf’ are tools that are loved in this field (iOS standard).

These applications can be used directly and easily like studying with actual paper. Also, they support basic value for studying.

However, they offer an unsatisfactory experience due to inconvenience (also slow) when studying and viewing contents(books) and malfunctioning palm rejection during writing with a pen.

Above all, they pose difficulties in utilizing and systematically managing data.

3. Contents viewer specialized in viewing books

There are PDF readers that are optimized than note when viewing contents. Currently, ‘PDF Expert’ is the number one application in the market and a well-made product (iOS standard).

This provides experiences, which are similar to writing on top of an actual book, in the digital environment. Rather than the note tool, it is more useful than viewing contents and allows users to write freely.

However, it is specialized for viewing PDF, and inconveniences are presented in actual writing and systematic management and utilization of information.

The current tools provide various functions, but they are not as good in terms of the basics. Also, we discovered that there are parts that do not fit with actual studying scenarios.

Above all, we feel very uncomfortable when studying in this digital environment. In order to solve these problems, we have developed a digital learning tool using a new method.

These are the reasons for developing ‘Flexcil’.
